Evaluating Journals

Various methods have been developed to evaluate academic journals and create journal rankings.

  • Impact Factors: available in Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and other citation analysis tools serve as indicators of the impact, or influence of a journal.  Though controversial, Impact Factors, which rank journals within a discipline, are extensively used in the sciences.
  • Journal Citation Reports (JCR): provides journal performance metrics for evaluating and comparing scholarly journals in science and social sciences. Using citation data drawn from over 10,000 high-impact international journals, Journal Citation Reports offers a quantifiable statistical method for identifying the most important and influential journals in a field.
  • SCImago Journal Ranking: is a weighted metric. The freely accessible web site contains rankings of more than 20,000 journals from the Scopus, one of the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, covering the fields of science, technology, medicine, social sciences and arts & humanities.
  • offers two ways to rank journals: by “Eigenfactor” or by “Article Influence”.  You can obtain Eigenfactor Score and Article Influence Score of a particular journal in Journal Citation Reports database, or search on website. ranks the influence of journals much as Google’s PageRank algorithm ranks the influence of web pages.


The Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) is a PubMed-indexed peer reviewed video journal. With a mission to increase the productivity of scientific research, it is devoted to the publication of biological, medical, chemical and physical research in a video format.


Science has been named one of the top 100 journals that have led the way in and biology and medicine over the last century by the Biomedical and Life Sciences Division of the Special Libraries Association (SLA).

The top 100 list is the result of a poll conducted by the SLA as part of its 100th anniversary celebration. The SLA is a professional group of librarians, information center managers, and publishing industry executives.

AAAS publishes three respected peer-reviewed journals:


PubMed, developed by the National Library of Medicine, provides access to bibliographic citations to biomedical journal articles, including MEDLINE , and to additional life sciences journals. MEDLINE is NLM’s database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences.  MEDLINE contains bibliographic citations and author abstracts from over 5400 biomedical journals published in the United States and 70 other countries and dating back to the 1940’s. Updated 5 times/week.
